The power of one Individual to make a difference
An outpouring of deep pain and immense pride were the contrasting emotions for the people of Galbally, as they said farewell to one of their greatest sons, Mickey Mc Caughey. Kind, caring, passionate and committed, many superlatives have been used to describe Mickey in life and death. But it was his contribution to the social, cultural and sporting life of this small rural community in Co. Tyrone that has been forefront in peoples mind. Mickey led a normal and simple life. Modest in nature, he never sought stature or glory for his endless efforts to improve the quality of life for others around him. He had an uncanny ability to do a huge amount of work with little fuss. Rooted in his heart and mind was a determination to make a positive difference in small and unassuming ways. Mickey touched hearts of all ages, exemplified by the range of young and old people who joined in grieving for his loss. Despite Mickey and his beloved wife Mary having no children, he was a father figure to others around him, showering people with love, care and attention. Mickey did not believe in people being strangers. He had an amazing ability to develop a conversation with anyone and no one escaped his attention. He made time for everyone. Strangers become friends after a short exchange of words with Mickey. People knew Mickey from far and wide. His travels across Ireland in attending ceili’s, spectating at club and county GAA matches, playing golf, fishing and to his mobile in Bundoran ensured that he had friends in every part of the Island. His positive attitude knew no bounds, even during the challenging period of ill health that he faced. His endless whistling and humming of tunes ensured that you heard Mickey before you saw him and was a trademark of his infectious enthusiasm for life. Mickey’s legacy is truly amazing. For over 50 years he was at the heart of Galbally Pearses GFC as a player, committee member, volunteer and supporter, holding the position of Honorary President at the time of his death. He was also one of the founding members of Galbally Youth & Community Association (GYCA), set up to lead on the development of a new community building in the heart of the local community. 20 years of unbroken service to GYCA as a committee member and lotto seller helped ensure that the local community boast one of the best facilities on the island of Ireland. Mickey also held the position of Chair at the time of his passing. Mickey never shirked responsibility and led by example at all times. He never needed to be asked twice. He just done whatever needed to be done, with no job being too big or too small. In a community in which many passionate and committed volunteers coexist, a measure of the esteem in which Mickey was held, is typified in the naming of a new room in his name following an extension to the community centre completed in April this year. The Mc Caughey Suite will always stand as a living memory to the power of one individual who made a difference. Mickey inspired a generation of people and in death he will continue to do so. It will be his integrity, respect for others and ability to unite people that will be some of his most memorable qualities from an incredible life. Whilst his death aged 72 on September 26 leaves a painful void in the lives of so many who knew him, it is the memories of him that will help shape our future.
